Laika's PG-13 film is the current front-runner in a category defined by adult themes and a lack of Disney or Pixar winners since 2024.

Animated films are currently facing a shift in how they are perceived by major awards bodies, with two contenders being submitted in drama categories at the Golden Globes instead of comedy. This move signals a deliberate effort to position these works as serious adult storytelling rather than family entertainment. The change reflects a wider trend where studios aim to broaden the appeal of the medium to older demographics.

Laika's 'Wildwood' stands as the leading contender for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. The film is the company's first PG-13 release in its 17-year history as a feature studio. At 130 minutes, it matches the record for the longest English-language animated film ever produced. Director and producer Travis Knight, who was previously nominated for 'Kubo and the Two Strings,' oversees a project that has received high critical acclaim despite modest box office returns.

The competition for the award includes a diverse group of directors who recently gathered for a panel at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. Travis Knight shared the stage with Brad Bird of 'Ray Gunn,' Daniel Chong of 'Hoppers,' Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado of 'Forgotten Island,' and Leah Nelson of 'Tangles.' Other notable entries in the race include Louis Clichy's 'Iron Boy' and Andrew Stanton's 'Toy Story 5,' creating one of the most competitive lineups in recent years.

The landscape of the award has changed since 'Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio' won at the 95th Academy Awards. Neither Disney nor Pixar has secured the trophy since that 2024 ceremony. The prize has instead gone to 'The Boy and the Heron,' 'Flow,' and 'KPop Demon Hunters.' This sequence breaks a long pattern of dominance by those two major studios, a streak that began when 'Shrek' won the first animated feature award in 2002.

Leah Nelson's 'Tangles' offers a distinct perspective on this shift. The film adapts the graphic memoir by Sarah Leavitt, focusing on her mother's battle with Alzheimer's disease in the late 1990s. Abbi Jacobson voices the character of Sarah, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus portrays her mother. Louis-Dreyfus also serves as a producer on the project alongside Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller Rogen. The film makes no effort to hide its adult narrative focus.

Historically, only three animated films have received a Best Picture nomination: 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'Up,' and 'Toy Story 3.' The most recent of these occurred 15 years ago. As the 99th Academy Awards approach, the category remains focused on these adult-oriented works. Nominations voting will take place from January 11 to 15, 2027, with the official list to be announced on January 21, 2027.

The Governors Awards, which will honor Glenn Close and Ridley Scott, are scheduled for Sunday, November 15. Preliminary voting for the 12-category shortlist runs from December 7 to 11, with results to be announced on December 15. The eligibility period closes on December 31, 2026. The ceremony itself will air live on ABC on March 14, 2027, hosted by Conan O'Brien from the Dolby Theatre.
