City Leaders Quiet After Park Rape
Governor Hochul and Attorney General James have not commented on the latest Central Park assault, contrasting their silence with their high-profile response to a recent Cornell case.

New York state’s top Democratic officials have remained silent following a violent sexual assault in Central Park, a lapse in communication that contrasts sharply with their rapid reaction to a separate high-profile case earlier this month. A 39-year-old woman was raped near the intersection of East 67th Street and East Drive on Saturday at approximately 8:30 p.m. Police reported that a stranger threatened the victim with a knife. The suspect remains at large.
Data indicate this is the fifth reported rape in the NYPD’s Central Park Precinct this year. For comparison, the precinct recorded three such cases at this point last year. Paul Mauro, a retired NYPD inspector and Fox News contributor, noted the location of the attack was near residences valued at $10 million. He described the rise in incidents as a concerning trend for public safety.
Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James have issued no public statement regarding Saturday’s victim. Their silence stands in contrast to their handling of a rape case involving seven Cornell fraternity members earlier this month. In that instance, Hochul appointed James as a special prosecutor shortly after the allegations broke. Mauro suggested the difference in response is political, noting that less than 10 days remain until the election.
"Let something hit the news like the Cornell case and all of a sudden they’re all over the media and they’re on a soapbox and they’re holding press conferences," Mauro said. He added that the current silence likely stems from the proximity of the vote.
City Council Speaker Julie Menin broke her silence on social media, expressing outrage at the act of violence. She stated that her thoughts were with the survivor and that every New Yorker deserves to feel safe in the city. The victim was transported to a hospital and is currently in stable condition according to police reports.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the attack during a news conference on Monday morning. He stated that his administration is working to support the survivor as she navigates the next steps. Mamdani said the city will continue to work with providers and partners to strengthen prevention and hold perpetrators accountable. He emphasized the goal of ensuring the city puts survivors' needs first.
The NYPD investigation is active and ongoing. The department has asked the public to contact the Sex Crimes Hotline or Crime Stoppers with any information regarding the suspect or the attack. The next major scheduled event in this sequence is the general election, which is less than 10 days away.
