Gov. Ron DeSantis announced $100 million in state grants for Florida water projects on Wednesday.
The funding is distributed across 45 distinct projects. Of that total, $50 million is designated for 23 specific efforts to restore natural freshwater springs. State officials project these upgrades will cut total nitrogen levels by more than 55,000 pounds annually. The remaining funds support alternative water supply initiatives across the state.
DeSantis made the announcement during a press conference in Crystal River. Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Alexis A. Lambert stood beside him. Lambert said the department will work with local communities to secure a sustainable clean water supply. She noted that DeSantis has shown a consistent commitment to protecting the state's waters.
"Today in Crystal River, I was proud to announce $100 million for springs restoration and alternative water supply projects throughout Florida," DeSantis said. He added that these investments build on past progress in protecting natural resources and improving water quality. DeSantis stated the goal is to leave the state better than it was found.
The grants aim to boost water quality and expand supply capacity. The specific project distribution details were released by the Executive Office of the Governor. The announcement coincided with a focus on reducing nitrogen levels in the state's natural springs.
