No. 1 Miami traveled to Chapel Hill, N.C., facing a North Carolina team that had recently defeated Pittsburgh and Duke. The Hurricanes emerged victorious with a 38-35 score on Saturday night, preserving their perfect 8-0 record and their top national ranking.

Mark Fletcher Jr. provided the decisive momentum shift late in the fourth quarter. With 7:49 remaining, he ran for a two-yard touchdown on fourth down to put Miami ahead. Shortly after, Marquise Lightfoot stripped the ball from Billy Edwards Jr. as the quarterback attempted a throw. Justin Scott recovered the fumble with 5:33 left, giving the Hurricanes possession to manage the closing minutes.

Miami converted that stop into a lead-extension drive. Quarterback Darian Mensah completed a nine-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Toney with 2:33 on the clock, widening the gap to 38-28. Elija Lofton also contributed on that drive, catching a pass over a defender to secure a first down. Coach Mario Cristobal noted the importance of the turnover, stating that the fumble was a massive turnaround that swung the game's momentum.

North Carolina, led by Bill Belichick, kept the score within reach for most of the second half. Edwards threw for a season-high 341 yards and four touchdowns. The Tar Heels sustained long drives, including one that lasted nearly eight and a half minutes. Tight end Jelani Thurman caught two of Edwards' touchdown passes. Despite the strong offensive performance, UNC fell to 0-12 against teams ranked No. 1.

The game featured defensive struggles for Miami, as the Hurricanes allowed their highest point total in regulation this season. North Carolina had two recoveries negated by penalties in the final minute. Miami recovered an onside kick to run out the clock and secure the win. The Tar Heels finish the night with a 4-4 record and a 2-3 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Mensah finished the game with 274 passing yards and three touchdowns. Two of his scores went to Toney, while one went to Fletcher. The result sets up a rematch against No. 5 Notre Dame next Saturday, a game Miami won last year to secure a College Football Playoff bid. North Carolina will leave conference play to visit UConn next week.
