Harry Kane won the Ballon d'Or on Monday, claiming football's highest individual honor and ending a 25 year wait for an English player to take the trophy. The award came after a season in which Kane set records for goalscoring while leading his club and country to deep tournament runs.

The England captain took the stage in London, where the ceremony was held. He appeared emotional as he accepted the prize.

"Wow, wow, wow! I am almost speechless," Kane said. "Being here in London has made it extra special. Made it a good omen for me tonight."

Kane's performance for Bayern Munich in 2025-26 drove his candidacy. He scored 61 goals in 51 games across all competitions, helping the German side win the league and cup. His club total combined with his international output to give him 73 goals for the year.

On the international stage, Kane scored six goals at the World Cup. His contributions helped England reach the semi-finals of the tournament.

Kane is the first Englishman to win the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen in 2001. At 33, he added the award to a resume that already lists him as England's all-time leading scorer and record World Cup goalscorer.

The competition for the award included several high-profile candidates. Kylian Mbappe finished second, with Lamine Yamal, Rodri, and Lionel Messi rounding out the top five. Voters chose Kane based on his consistency throughout the season.

In the women's category, Alexia Putellas won the Ballon d'Or Feminin for the third time. She earned the award after winning a treble with Barcelona in 2025-26. Putellas moved to London City Lionesses in July after 14 years at her former club.

Lamine Yamal won the young talent award for the third time, while Vicky Lopez took the women's version of the prize for the second year in a row. Luis de la Fuente was named men's coach of the year, and Pere Romeu won the women's coaching award.

Unai Simon received the men's goalkeeper award, and Cata Coll won the women's version. Paris Saint Germain was named men's club of the year, while Barcelona received the women's club honor. Bukayo Saka received the Socrates Award for humanitarian work.
