Voters in Broward and Palm Beach counties elected Lauren Book to the Florida Senate on Tuesday night. She won the District 30 seat with almost 63% of the vote, leaving Republican challenger Hector Rivera far behind. The result places a known figure back in the chamber after an eight-year absence.

Book, 42, previously held the seat for two terms starting in 2016. She served as Senate minority leader from 2021 to 2024. The position opened when incumbent Democratic state Sen. Tina Polsky decided not to run for another term.

The district covers specific parts of southern Broward County. It includes areas south of Glades Road in Boca Raton and extends northwest from Dixie Highway to the Sawgrass Expressway. Coral Springs, Parkland, and Margate all fall within these lines. Democratic voters hold a strong advantage in this region.

Rivera is a real estate broker based in Coral Springs. He ran against Book in a race that drew attention from local political watchers. The vote count reflects the established lean of the district toward the Democratic Party.

Book issued a statement thanking voters for their trust. She described herself as a mother and a lifelong advocate for children and families. "I don't take that trust lightly," she said. She emphasized her experience in Tallahassee and her commitment to getting work done.

Her political path began in her youth. Book testified before a state legislative committee at age 17. She sought to change a law that blocked her from accessing her abuser's HIV test results. "I wasn't fighting to change what had happened to me, but I could fight to make sure no one else would have to go through what I did," she stated. She said that experience taught her to choose action over acceptance when facing injustice.

In 2007, she founded the nonprofit Lauren’s Kids. The organization focuses on sexual abuse prevention through school curriculums and family resources. Book cited this work as part of the determination that guided her time in the Senate. She listed specific achievements from her previous tenure. These include strengthening protections for children, passing bipartisan gun safety legislation, and eliminating the sales tax on diapers. She said there is still much work remaining for her new term.
