Nearly 60 million Americans have already voted in the 2026 midterm elections, according to Pew Research Center data. These ballots were cast via early in-person voting or by mail ahead of Tuesday's Election Day.
The total represents a small fraction of the roughly 250 million eligible voters. The outcome will determine which party controls Congress and influence President Donald Trump's capacity to advance his legislative agenda for the next two years.
All 435 U.S. House seats are up for grabs, alongside 35 Senate seats. Hundreds of local races are also on the ballot in various jurisdictions.
Early voting totals do not definitively indicate which party is gaining ground. Even in states where party registration is reported, affiliation does not always predict candidate support.
The Justice Department is deploying approximately 1,000 election monitors and observers across all 50 states. This marks the department's first monitoring effort to reach every state. Their duties include overseeing compliance with federal voting rights laws, such as protections against voter intimidation and access requirements for voters with disabilities.
Control of Congress may remain unsettled beyond election night. Close contests and the time required to count outstanding ballots could delay final results.
