Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, securing his ninth victory of the Formula One season. The 20-year-old Italian driver started from pole position and finished the 56-lap race in 1:35:16.650, crossing the line ahead of Charles Leclerc, who trailed by 13.078 seconds.

The result increases Antonelli's lead over his Mercedes teammate, George Russell, to 123 points with five races remaining on the calendar. Russell must win the next event in Mexico City to remain mathematically viable in the title fight. If Russell fails to take the victory, the championship will be awarded to Antonelli. Mercedes has also extended its advantage in the constructors' standings to 133 points over Ferrari, holding 607 points to Ferrari's 474.

Strategy dictated the outcome of the race. While most competitors adopted a two-stop plan, Antonelli's engineers kept him on track until Lap 25. He made a single pit stop and finished the remainder of the race without returning to the pits. Antonelli credited the team for the decision, describing it as a perfect conclusion to the weekend and an incredible collective effort to trust in a one-stop approach.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing finished third, 17.485 seconds behind the winner. The four-time champion is now out of the running for the 2026 title and will go two seasons without a world championship after winning every title from 2021 to 2024. Verstappen noted that his car's overall pace was insufficient and that the available tires were not optimal. He acknowledged that a Virtual Safety Car may have helped secure his podium finish.

The Virtual Safety Car was triggered on Lap 52 when Valtteri Bottas's Cadillac stopped on the track. It remained in effect until the penultimate lap, a period during which no driver could challenge Antonelli's lead. Antonelli has now won both United States events on this year's schedule, with the Las Vegas Grand Prix scheduled for November.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Antonelli's performance, calling it the best race the driver has produced to date. Wolff highlighted how Antonelli managed the inferior tire from the start and controlled the race throughout. The team boss stated that the young driver has outperformed the car's capabilities and that his driving style suits the machine well. Antonelli agreed, noting that while his home win at Monza was special due to the car's speed, Sunday's execution was superior because of the team's ability to build performance across the weekend.

Antonelli remains focused on finishing the season strongly as he looks toward 2027. He described the championship as being close but maintained that his mindset has not changed. The next race is scheduled for Mexico City, where Russell will attempt to close the 123-point deficit.
