New College of Florida has been named the top liberal arts college in the state for the 2027 academic year. The designation comes from Niche, a college ranking service that evaluates institutions based on academic performance and student outcomes. The school also recorded its highest placement in Forbes' 2027 list of public universities.
The institution has maintained a B+ overall grade from Niche for the past six years. This year, the college improved its standing by earning an A grade for Academics, a category that accounts for 35% of the total Niche score. It also received an A grade for Diversity and Professors. In the Niche rankings, New College of Florida is listed as the third best small college in Florida and the ninth top public university in the state. It ranks 59th among liberal arts colleges in the United States.
Forbes placed the school at 82nd for best public colleges in the U.S. and 80th for best colleges in the South. The college attributes its improved rankings to a focus on individualized academic plans and rigorous coursework. President Richard Corcoran stated that the school does not chase rankings but rather pursues excellence. He noted that students are required to defend their ideas, conduct original research, and master critical thinking. Corcoran described the high rankings as a byproduct of an institution that demands high standards from its students and faculty.
The 2027 Niche methodology includes a new metric called the Institutional Success Score, which makes up 5% of the final ranking. This score evaluates colleges against peers with similar missions rather than using a single standardized benchmark. The update allows institutions with unique academic structures to be recognized for excelling at their specific goals. New College of Florida utilizes academic contracts and requires a senior thesis, features that align with the new evaluation criteria.
The college was founded in 1960 and serves as Florida's designated public honors college. It is located on a 151-acre campus on Sarasota Bay. The institution offers more than 50 undergraduate majors. Graduate programs include Applied Data Science and Marine Mammal Science. A new Master’s program in Educational Leadership is also available. The school maintains a growing NAIA athletics program alongside its academic offerings.
