A private jet crashed into a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday.

All nine people on board the aircraft died in the incident. The plane was heading to the Bahamas when it descended sharply and hit the ground near a heavily traveled road.

The crash occurred at 12:50 p.m. local time. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the loss of all occupants and described the event as a horrible tragedy. He stated that the Federal Aviation Administration would support the National Transportation Safety Board investigation.

Family members identified Nathalia G. Filgueiras, 20, as one of the victims. She served as the co-pilot on the Learjet 60.

Witnesses in nearby cars captured video of the aircraft falling from the sky. The jet exploded in a large ball of fire just meters from houses. Flames flickered around shards of asphalt near the impact crater, while thick black smoke rose from the site.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis visited the scene and told reporters the crash was catastrophic. He said the jet looked like a missile descending and left a large crater beside the road. Residents gathered to express shock that the plane missed nearby vehicles by centimeters.

Air traffic control recordings show the pilot declared an emergency shortly before the impact. The pilot reported clear and light ice that was manageable along with moderate turbulence. The situation worsened when the aircraft encountered precipitation. The pilot requested a climb but then began losing altitude rapidly. Radio transmissions indicate the jet was descending at 8,000 feet per minute before accelerating to 20,000 feet per minute. The pilot stated the aircraft was in an overspeed condition and announced they were going to hit the ground.
