U.S. Representative Keith Self, a Republican from North Texas, confirmed that federal agents detained a 17-year-old from McKinney on suspicion of plotting to assassinate him. The congressman is currently seeking a third term in office representing Texas' third congressional district. Campaign officials verified the details of the arrest and the subsequent security measures taken by the lawmaker's team.
According to Self's campaign manager, the FBI took the teenager into custody on October 5. The congressman's staff learned of the detention through the U.S. Capitol Police on October 6. Investigators told the campaign that the teen had been radicalized and was under federal monitoring. Officials also stated that the suspect was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS and intended to target Self at a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans. That event was scheduled for October 17 and featured former Cowboys players and other high-profile guests.
Self stated that his team increased their situational awareness once they received the news, though he noted he already maintained a significant level of security. He credited his previous military service for helping him remain calm during the threat. He explained that because he had deployed to combat zones multiple times, he understood the nature of the risk without panicking. He said he needed to determine if the suspect was a lone wolf and took the situation seriously without it being traumatic.
The representative noted that his wife, who spent 25 years as a military spouse, also handled the news with seriousness. Self acknowledged that he has received threats in the past, but he emphasized that this was different because it led to an arrest. He described the potential incident as serious based on the information provided to his team. Despite the allegations, Self attended the planned event and judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans. He reported that nothing happened during the gathering.
The lawmaker has continued his campaign activities, including poll greeting and meeting voters. He stated that the threat would not deter him from alerting the public to specific political ideologies. His opponent, Evan Hunt, also condemned the plot on social media. The arrest aligns with Self's recent legislative activity, including a September resolution denouncing Sharia law. The case is also notable because McKinney, where the teen is from, recently approved a mosque expansion after contentious public debate. The FBI Dallas office has not yet responded to requests for more information, and the teen's identity has not been released.
The situation highlights the intersection of local political tensions and federal security efforts in the region. As the midterm election cycle progresses, both the campaign and federal agencies are monitoring the situation closely. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are working to understand the full scope of the planned attack.
