Atletico Madrid fans booed Julian Alvarez for weeks after he voiced a desire to join Barcelona. The Argentine striker addressed the tension on Saturday after scoring the winning goal against Deportivo La Coruna, a result that moved his team within two points of the La Liga leaders.

The Spanish Football Federation fined Barcelona 602 euros, or roughly $670, for its pursuit of the striker. The penalty follows a complaint from Atletico, which alleged Barcelona contacted Alvarez without first notifying them in writing. The fine is issued under Article 133 of the federation's regulations. Atletico also filed a complaint with FIFA, which stated it had no jurisdiction over the matter.

Alvarez acknowledged the friction with his supporters during a post-match interview. He said he understood why the crowd was angry, noting that he would feel the same way if he were a fan. He referenced an interview from the 2026 World Cup in which he stated he wanted to fulfill his dream of playing for Barcelona, a comment that sparked a transfer dispute throughout the summer window.

The striker's relationship with the Metropolitano crowd has been strained this season. However, sections of the home crowd gave him a standing ovation after his Saturday goal. This reaction suggests the resentment over his public comments may be fading.

Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal worth up to 95 million euros. Since arriving in Madrid, he has scored 51 goals in 115 appearances. His contract with the club runs through June 2030.
