Political commentators and celebrities often maintain a delicate balance with the administration, but recent events have strained that relationship.

Bill Maher addressed a lengthy criticism from President Donald Trump during the Friday night episode of Real Time with Bill Maher.

Trump published a 1,300-word post on Truth Social on Sunday night. In the text, he labeled Maher a complete and total loser and a major POTHEAD. The president also stated that Maher looked like hell during their dinner earlier this month. Trump claimed that Maher had begged him for years to appear on his HBO show. He further asserted that he will never watch the show again because it is fake news.

Maher responded by comparing the experience of dining at the White House to dating Taylor Swift. He told the audience that it involves a lot of laughs at the time, but later on, they are tearing you a new asshole. He also noted that the White House is the opposite of the Cheesecake Factory because guests receive a review after they leave. The host referred to the Trump post as a flex, noting it was the longest one ever sent out.

The dinner in question featured Trump, Maher, ESPN pundit Stephen A. Smith, and former rapper Kid Rock. Maher stated that the point of these gatherings is to talk and disagree while listening. He said that Trump listens in person, but the heartache begins when he returns to his job. Maher read directly from a printout of the Truth Social post to address specific allegations.

Maher conceded to the insult of being a loser, saying he would own that. He argued that Trump does not notice what Maher actually said. The host played a video clip to refute Trump's claim that Maher did not think it was a good idea to disarm Iran. Maher showed footage of himself stating the opposite. He also corrected the claim that he calls Trump incessantly, stating that Trump calls him and that he would be afraid to call the president because he is too busy.

Maher called it ridiculous that Trump claimed he invited himself to the White House. He also addressed the allegation that he had a severely bruised eye and nose area by showing pictures from the day without them. Maher ended his segment by reading the opening line of the post, which began with the phrase Let's talk about the complete and total loser Bill Maher.
