Early Anthropic Backers See Portfolio Values Soar Ahead of Potential $2 Trillion IPO
Venture capital firms and prominent individuals have seen their stakes in the AI laboratory multiply significantly, with some positions now valued in the billions of dollars.

A massive financial windfall is approaching for the investors who backed Anthropic, even before the company officially goes public. While the artificial intelligence firm is anticipated to list this year at a valuation reaching as high as $2 trillion, the stakes held by its early and later-stage backers are already worth billions at the current private market price. The tension lies in the rapid appreciation of these assets, which have grown exponentially since initial investments were made just a few years ago.
According to Bloomberg, the company’s latest private valuation stands at $965 billion. This figure serves as the baseline for calculating the current worth of shares held by prominent figures and venture capital firms. The data reveals that even at this pre-IPO stage, the financial returns for key stakeholders are substantial, with some investments seeing gains of several hundred percent or more.
Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, is among the most notable beneficiaries of this growth. He invested in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, when the startup was valued at just $461 million, according to PitchBook data. Today, Schmidt holds approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion, reflecting a dramatic increase from his initial entry point.
Later-stage investors have also reaped significant rewards. Iconiq, an investment outfit, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was valued at $183 billion. That substantial late-stage bet has appreciated to $17 billion. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested more than $1 billion over time. Their stake is currently valued at $14 billion, solidifying their position as major beneficiaries of the AI boom.
Sequoia, another famed venture capital firm, entered the portfolio more recently. The firm first backed the AI lab earlier this year, when Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. A $3 billion investment secured them about 1% ownership. Despite the high entry valuation, their investment has already more than doubled in value, demonstrating the continued upward trajectory of the company's worth.
Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position. The firm invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million to its commitment. This cumulative investment has resulted in a stake now worth billions. Notably, Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the original investment remains intact.
Spark Capital offers perhaps the most striking example of capital appreciation. As the only known venture capital firm with a board seat at Anthropic, Spark invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to reach a current value of $7 billion. These figures illustrate the extraordinary returns available to those who positioned themselves correctly in the fast-moving AI sector.
As Anthropic moves toward its expected public listing this year, the focus will shift from private market valuations to public market performance. If the company achieves the projected $2 trillion valuation, the stakes held by these backers could potentially double again. For now, the data confirms that the early and mid-stage backers of this leading AI lab have already secured some of the most lucrative positions in the technology industry.
