The American Victory, a World War II era ship docked in Tampa, Florida, has opened its decks for a Halloween attraction called Undead in the Water. The vessel, built in 1944, serves as Florida’s state flagship and is one of only three ships of its type still in existence. It has seen service in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War before transitioning to a community and training role.

The seasonal event turns the ship into a darkened, multi-deck maze filled with performers dressed as zombies. Visitors move through corridors and cabins to complete the experience. Anthea Onufrak, vice president of operations, described the event as a "huge hit" that people enjoy for the scare factor.

Actors on board aim to provide a consistent experience for every group. Maddie Bickel, an actor with the show, said the goal is to make every night cohesive and fun. "It's scaring a person and making their friend watch them and have a good time," Bickel said. "And then it's the scream, and then. Yeah, and it's always fun."

Bill Kuzmick, president and CEO of The Victory Ship, noted that the ship continues to serve the community through training for active duty troops, reserves, police, firefighters, and working dogs. Kuzmick also addressed rumors of genuine hauntings on the vessel. "We do get a lot of ghost hunters on board," Kuzmick said. "A lot of them say they found stuff. A lot of it happens in the same places all the time. I'll let you be the judge."

The ship will host a Veterans Day celebration in November. The event will include historical education, ceremonial activities, and living history displays. Onufrak said organizers hope to have World War II veterans on board for the occasion. A two-year-old bald eagle named Miss America will be present for educational sessions and photo opportunities.

Planned activities for the November event include military vehicles on the dock, pinup displays, and performances by the Sea Cadets. The National Anthem will be performed at noon by a group of harmonica players from Bay Pines.

The American Victory remains a key part of Tampa’s maritime history. While the zombie show draws crowds during the fall, the ship maintains its year-round schedule of public gatherings and training exercises.
