Broqsten Bunt, a 36-year-old resident of West Palm Beach, has been medically cleared following brain surgery. The procedure to remove a meningioma, a type of aggressive brain tumor, was performed at Tampa General Hospital. Bunt confirms that his medical bills, which had a retail value of $993,000, have been reduced to a zero balance.

The financial burden was lifted after a complex dispute with his insurance provider, Florida Blue. Bunt’s case began in June of this year when he received a diagnosis linked to childhood radiation therapy for leukemia. His local neurosurgeon referred him to a specialist in Tampa due to the complexity of the tumor. Although Tampa General Hospital is in-network with Florida Blue, the specific surgeon Bunt required was out-of-network.

Florida Blue denied an appeal for additional coverage for the out-of-network care just before the scheduled operation. Bunt proceeded with the surgery in June while simultaneously managing calls from both the medical office and the insurance company. During the initial reporting on his case, a spokesperson for Tampa General Hospital announced that the insurer had agreed to cover the preoperative workup, surgeries, hospital admission, and postoperative care. Neither the hospital nor the insurer provided a specific reason for the sudden reversal at that time.

In the months following the surgery, Bunt and his wife pursued the matter through two denied appeals before turning to social media and news outlets. Bunt stated that the increased public awareness of his situation was the factor that changed the insurer's position. He noted that no new medical information was added to the file between the denied appeals and the final approval. “What really changed is when the news stepped in and created the awareness of the severity of my case,” Bunt said.

Bunt confirmed that Tampa General Hospital worked with him to reduce his deductible to zero. A hospital spokesperson verified that his insurer paid the full hospital portion of the claim. Bunt described his recovery as successful, noting that his strength has returned and he has no current prescriptions or future medical needs. “Everything is working like it used to pre-surgery,” he said.

The resolution highlights the difficulty patients face when challenging insurance decisions. Bunt advised other patients in similar situations to remain persistent. “Don't back off the gas,” he said. “You just have to keep pushing and keep reaching out to people. You have to get the care you need so that you can survive.”

Florida Blue stated it cannot discuss individual cases but said it is pleased when positive outcomes are reached through its appeals process. The insurer works with members, doctors, and hospitals to resolve disputes. Bunt’s case, which began in June, is now fully settled with no remaining financial obligations for the surgical treatment.

Bunt continues to live in West Palm Beach. He is no longer in contact with his medical team for the specific tumor removal, as he has been cleared for normal activity. The $993,000 bill, which represented the retail value of the care provided, was the primary driver of his financial stress before the insurance reversal.
