Israeli citizens went to the polls on Monday to select their next prime minister and government, marking the first national vote since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. The election pits incumbent Benjamin Netanyahu, the country's longest-serving leader, against Gadi Eisenkot, a former military chief who advocates for increased diplomacy and a move away from far-right politics.

Voter turnout is expected to be high, with many residents viewing this contest as a decisive moment for the nation's future. Citizens living abroad flew home specifically to cast their ballots. At one polling station, reporter Ruth Sherlock spoke with Itamar Ariel, who believes only Netanyahu can guarantee Israel's security despite current challenges. Other voters argue for a change in leadership to address security failures and push for an investigation into the events of October 7, which Netanyahu has previously blocked.

The outcome will not be immediately clear. While initial seat counts in Parliament may be available by Wednesday morning, the final tally could take days to complete. Even after seats are distributed, the formation of a government will depend on negotiations between parties that could last for days or weeks.

In the United States, a new poll from NPR, PBS News, and Marist indicates Democrats hold an eight-point advantage among likely voters on the generic congressional ballot. This lead suggests a strong position for the party to gain control of the U.S. House of Representatives. President Trump’s approval rating currently sits at 40%, a slight improvement from previous figures.

Despite the Democratic edge, the Senate remains a close race. Pollsters note that voters are influenced by financial concerns, with one in three Americans reporting hardships and four in ten saying their personal finances are worsening. For Democrats and independents, preserving democracy is a primary issue, while immigration remains the top concern for MAGA supporters.

In related election news, a federal judge heard arguments on Monday regarding the Trump administration's attempt to force California to set aside ballots from voters it claims may not be citizens. This legal battle follows an appeals court's decision the previous evening to stay out of the dispute. The administration recently offered a $1 million reward for tips leading to voter fraud convictions, a move election officials say prepares the ground for similar accusations after the midterms.

Meanwhile, prediction market platform Polymarket stated it has investigated dozens of bets related to the upcoming midterm elections. The company’s head of global intelligence and investigations, Shana Bautista, confirmed the review of these specific wagers as the election approaches.
