More than 2,000 registered sexual offenders and predators live in Hillsborough County, according to local safety officials. They are urging families to verify neighborhood details before children head out for trick-or-treating this Saturday.

Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, which complicates an already busy evening. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement maintains a public database that allows parents to search for nearby registered offenders and predators. Officials recommend using this tool to map out safe routes for children.

Sexual offenders currently on probation face specific restrictions on Halloween night. They are prohibited from handing out candy, displaying Halloween decorations, or leaving their porch lights on. A probation officer can arrest an offender who violates these rules.

Dr. Alexa Ragusa, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital, warned that the excitement of the holiday often lowers children's awareness of their surroundings. She cited the risk of children stepping into the street unexpectedly after dark as a primary concern. Costumes that fit poorly can further impair a child's vision and make them harder for drivers to see.

To improve visibility, Ragusa suggested adding reflective tape or stickers to costumes and candy bags. Children should also carry flashlights or glow sticks. AAA recommends that adults supervise any child younger than 12 while they are out on the streets.

E-bikes and electric scooters present additional hazards on crowded sidewalks. Ragusa advised that walking is the best option for Halloween night. Those who do ride must wear a properly fitted helmet and avoid carrying extra passengers. Loose costume pieces like capes can get caught in wheels or interfere with steering controls.

Drivers are advised to slow down in residential areas and check their surroundings before backing out of driveways. AAA noted that families should expect additional weekend traffic as people head to parties and other events. Pedestrians should use crosswalks and avoid crossing between parked cars.

Parents should seek emergency care if a child experiences difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, severe trauma, or uncontrolled bleeding. Other conditions that warrant an ER visit include serious head injuries, suspected broken bones, deep cuts, significant burns, or severe allergic reactions. Ragusa noted that children who fall from e-bikes, scooters, or golf carts should be monitored for changes in behavior or excessive sleepiness.
