Tesla announced this week that it has reached 1.74 million active Full Self-Driving subscriptions. This figure represents a 67% increase compared to the same period last year. The company detailed this progress in its Q3 2026 shareholder letter, which outlines the metrics used to evaluate its performance. The new total includes both owners who pay a monthly fee and those who purchased the software upfront.

This counting method is significant because it aligns with the criteria set for Elon Musk’s 2025 CEO Performance Award. The letter explicitly states that the metric follows the award's definition by including upfront payments. Consequently, drivers who bought the software years ago, often for prices up to $15,000, are still counted as active subscribers. Tesla stopped selling the feature as a one-time purchase on February 14, 2026. Since that date, new customers in the US have only been able to access it via a $99 monthly subscription.

The distinction matters for investors and analysts tracking the company’s growth. One of the key milestones for Musk’s pay package is reaching 10 million active FSD subscriptions. By including long-term owners, Tesla accelerates its progress toward that target. However, the company has not disclosed how many of the 1.74 million users are currently paying the monthly fee versus those who paid upfront. Tesla previously reported 1.28 million users in April, and the gap between the total count and the monthly-paying segment remains a point of interest.

Similar accounting practices appear in other parts of the report. Tesla’s cumulative deliveries figure now stands at 10.2 million. This number includes unsupervised Robotaxis placed into commercial operation. This inclusion mirrors the pay package structure, which has a separate milestone for 20 million total vehicle deliveries. Tesla noted that as of June 30, only the 20 million delivery milestone was considered probable for achievement.

The letter also highlights a 75% attach rate for new deliveries in North America during the third quarter. Tesla describes this as a nearly twenty percentage point increase from the previous quarter. The company believes this high adoption rate is driving demand in markets where the software is available. However, the letter does not define exactly how this rate is calculated. It is unclear if it includes introductory offers or if it tracks long-term retention after the initial purchase period.

Tesla added 260,000 net FSD subscriptions in Q3, marking its best quarter to date. If the company maintains this pace, it would take approximately eight years to reach the 10 million target. At the average rate of the last 12 months, which is roughly 700,000 per year, the timeline extends to about 12 years. The compensation award remains in effect until 2035, giving the company ample time to work toward these operational goals.

For readers in the Southeast and across the country, the primary takeaway is the shift in how Tesla reports its software business. The company now presents the total count of users as its headline metric. While this includes all active vehicles with the software, it blurs the line between current monthly payers and legacy owners. This approach provides a broader view of market penetration but requires careful interpretation when assessing the recurring revenue stream.
